When you need square meters in R-A-P-D
A survey, a site plan or a building drawing may give a plot in square meters while the lalpurja gives it in ropani, aana, paisa and dam. Writing the metric figure as R-A-P-D lets you check one against the other before you buy or build.
There is no single factor, because R-A-P-D is four units at once. Convert to square feet first (× 10.7639), then take out ropani (5,476 sq ft each), aana (342.25), paisa (85.5625) and dam (21.390625) in turn, carrying the remainder down.
Landmarks help: 4 aana (0-4-0-0) is 127.18 sq m and a ropani 508.74 sq m, so any area between the two starts with 0-4 to 0-15.
Worked example: 300 sq m
- Square feet: 300 × 10.7639 = 3,229.17 sq ft.
- Ropani: 3,229.17 ÷ 5,476 = 0.5897, so 0 ropani.
- Aana: 3,229.17 ÷ 342.25 = 9.44, so 9 aana, leaving 148.92 sq ft.
- Paisa: 148.92 ÷ 85.5625 = 1.74, so 1 paisa, leaving 63.36 sq ft.
- Dam: 63.36 ÷ 21.390625 = 2.96 dam.
So 300 sq m is 0-9-1-2.96, or 9.44 aana.
Going back, multiply each part by its size in square meters (ropani 508.74, aana 31.8, paisa 7.95, dam 1.99) and add: 0-9-1-2.96 comes back to 300 sq m.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a round figure. A metric area seldom lands on a whole dam: 1 sq m is about half a dam (0-0-0-0.5), so expect a decimal in the last place.
- Reading the result as one number. 0-9-1-2.96 is 9 aana, 1 paisa and a part of a dam, not 9.1 of anything.
- Skipping the carry. If a step leaves 4 paisa or 4 dam, it rolls up: 0-3-4-0 is really 0-4-0-0.
