When you need ropani in aana
Land in the Kathmandu Valley is bought and sold by the aana: house plots are a few aana and prices are quoted per aana, so a figure in ropani usually has to become aana before you can price it or picture it. The reverse comes up as well, when a seller's 24 aana turns out to be a ropani and a half.
The units nest neatly: 1 ropani = 16 aana, 1 aana = 4 paisa and 1 paisa = 4 dam, so 1 ropani = 64 paisa = 256 dam. Multiply ropani by 16 for aana. For any part of an aana left over, multiply by 4 for paisa, and what is left of a paisa by 4 again for dam.
Worked examples
2.5 × 16 = 40 aana. On a lalpurja that is 2-8-0-0: 2 ropani and 8 aana, since half a ropani is 8 aana. In square feet it is 13,690.
A messier one: 1.3 × 16 = 20.8 aana, which is 1 ropani and 4.8 aana. The 0.8 aana is 3.2 paisa, so 3 paisa and 0.8 dam. Written out: 1-4-3-0.8.

Common mistakes
- Reading the decimal as aana. 1.3 ropani is not 1 ropani 3 aana (1-3-0-0); it is 1-4-3-0.8, 1.8 aana more.
- Writing aana past 15. 16 aana is a ropani, so 0-16-0-0 should be written 1-0-0-0, and 4 paisa should carry into the next aana.
- Assuming a ropani makes four 4-aana plots. On paper it does, but any access road or setback comes out of the same 16 aana.
